International Organizations in Iceland
Rauði Krossinn or the Icelandic Red Cross attends to many projects in various fields.
- The Icelandic Red Cross is crucial in offering social support for refugees and immigrants as well as advocating for their rights.
- They help prisoners start a new life after serving their sentence
- Vinaverkefni or the friend project aims to reduce the number of people who are socially isolated.
- Frú Ragnheiður is a harm reduction program where people with a drug abuse problem can look for assistance and avoid an untimely death or deadly diseases.
- The Icelandic Red Cross operates the 1717 hotline where people can receive psychosocial support, advice, someone to talk to and information further assistance.
- The Red Cross operates a thrift store which gives old objects and clothes a second chance as well as supporting the work the Red Cross does in Iceland and abroad.

The Icelandic branch of Amnesty International places its emphasis on climate justice, freedom of speech, elimination of the death penalty, against solitary confinement of prisoners in Iceland and advocates for the rights of refugees. UNICEF is the children’s help organization of the United Nations, and advocates for all children’s rights. They provide emergency assistance as well as long-term solutions. In Iceland, UNICEF protects the rights of children. Abroad, UNICEF is actively working to improve healthcare, education, emergency assistance, and improved nutrition for children, as well as: advocating for child protection, clean water and sanitation, fight against HIV, and children’s rights. Barnaheill is the Icelandic branch of the international organization Save the Children. Barnaheill is a leading force in changing perceptions and procedures regarding children’s issues and children’s rights. Their vision for the future is a world where every child has the opportunity to live and thrive, receives quality education, lives in safety and has the opportunity to contribute. In Iceland Barnaheill works to protect children from violence. The project “Vinátta,” or “Friendship,” works to prevent bullying in preschools and elementary schools, and the curriculum “Verndarar barna,” or “Children’s Protectors,” which is to prevent sexual violence against children. Their work is made possible with financial contributions.
Environment
Landvernd is an NGO working on environmental issues in order to protect and improve the quality of life in the country. Landvernd’s role is to safeguard Icelandic nature and be an active participant in strategic planning, education and informed decision-making in matters relating to land use, resources and the environment. You can give back to nature by supporting Landvernd.
Náttúruverndarsamtök Íslands is an association of people interested in the protection of nature. They advocate for environmental protection and the conservation of Icelandic nature.
Græna Torgið is a website and a periodical which informs consumers on where to find products and services that align with sustainability and general information about sustainable practices. Græna Torgið offers sustainability solutions for everyday life.
The Global Footprint Network is a non-profit organization whose goal is to change how people think about resources by delivering information about ecological footprints in a clear and simple manner. The Global Footprint Network website offers a comprehensive ecological footprint calculator and offers solutions on how to reduce your impact.
To keep global warming within 1.5°C, westerns need to reduce the amount of greenhouse gasses we release. To get a rudimentary understanding of the amount we are personally responsible for it may be handy to calculate our carbon footprint. Kolefnisreiknir is the Icelandic carbon footprint calculator.
Plokk in Iceland is made up of individuals who respect their environment and whose hobby it is to walk around and pick up litter and bring it to recycling.
The Icelandic Youth Environmentalist Association is a non-governmental organization with the primary objective of giving young people a platform to positively influence the way society interacts with nature. Young environmentalists want to live in balance with nature, in a society where man, his production and consumption are part of a natural cycle and where positive environmentalism is as natural as civil rights. Anyone can join the association or support them with a financial contribution.
Vinir Íslenskrar Náttúru
Friends of Icelandic Nature is an association which advocates for the protection of Icelandic nature. They emphasize the detrimental effects of invasive species in Icelandic nature and suggest improvements and solutions. They support actions to reduce the release of greenhouse gases and carbon capture solutions that do not have detrimental effects on Icelandic nature. They are entirely supported by financial contributions from individuals and companies.
The North Atlantic Salmon Fund, or NASF, is a non-profit conservation organization dedicated to Atlantic salmon and marine biodiversity. Today, NASF is a leader in Atlantic salmon conservation. The Icelandic division of NASF has taken action against power plants that contaminate salmon trails, such as the plant located in the lower part of river Þjórsá. The Fund has also been outspoken against plans for large-scale aquaculture in open net pens on Icelandic shores and works to call attention to the subsequent danger to other salmonids and to the environment. Given the environmental impact of open net pens in particular, this battle links the Fund’s work to many other environmental conservation efforts and interest groups who support wildlife sustainability.
Consumption
The Consumers´ Association of Iceland (NS) is a membership-based association with the main objective of safeguarding the rights of consumers in Iceland. NS was established in the year 1953 and is one of the oldest consumer association in the world. NS is mainly funded by membership fees from our members based in Iceland. NS offers its members free legal guidance and assistance if needed regarding disputes with traders based in Iceland. On Thursdays NS offers all consumers to call them during opening hours and they provide general legal guidance and information free of charge.
Saman gegn sóun (together against waste) is the policy program of the Ministry for Environment, Energy and Climate about waste prevention. Umhverfisstofnun, The Environmental Agency of Iceland is in charge of Saman gegn sóun. The goal of the program is to reduce the amount of waste created in Iceland, reduce the release of greenhouse gases, reduce the amount of raw resources needed for production, improve the exploitation of natural resources, create incentives for green innovation and reduce the use of harmful materials.
Reddingakaffi is the Icelandic version of Repair Café. You can arrive with broken objects, bicycles and textiles and receive information, tools and materials to repair what you brought.
Is a library where you can borrow all sorts of useful tools and items. It is a collaboration project between the City Library RVK Tool Library. They have self-checkout systems in Reykjavik City Library Grófin, Reykjavik City Library Gerðuberg, Reykjavík City Library Kringlan and Reykjavik City Library Úlfarsárdalur. The variety in the cupboards changes regularly.

Orkusetur’s objective is to increase the public’s awareness about efficient energy use and opportunities to save energy. One of their main goals is to find and introduce ways to reduce the use of fossil fuels.
Slow food Reykjavik is the Icelandic division of the international Slow Food movement, which is an association of people interested in food and environmental protection. Slow food advocates for using locally sourced products and traditional methods of production. They advocate against the use of pesticides, for diversity in agricultural production and support producers that use traditional and organic methods.
Humble is an app in development which strives to reduce food waste. Consumers will be given the opportunity to purchase food that would have otherwise gone to waste at a reduced cost. They have plans to create an upcycling kitchen, where they will use this food to create products for sale.
Health and Well-being
Geðhjálp is an association of 7,500 members, families, professionals and amateurs who work to better the conditions of those who are dealing with mental health related challenges. Geðhjálp strives to improve mental health services, safeguards the rights of those dealing with mental health issues and fights stigmas associated with seeking help. You can become a member of Geðhjálp.
Hugarafl is an association of people who have experienced a personal crisis and who are working towards their recovery and their families. Hugarafl’s goals are to fight stigma and prejudices in Icelandic society, operate and develop services for individuals who are working on improving their mental health. You can support Hugarafl with financial contributions.
Hugrún is a group that aims to inform young people about mental health, emotional problems and solutions. Hugrún travels around the country and gives informative lectures in local high schools. University Students run the organization and its work is made possible through financial contributions.
Píeta works to prevent suicides and self-harm and offers support to the loved ones of suicide victims. Píeta offers first aid as well as accessible service, support and therapy for those that are at a risk of suicide and is a conduit for solutions for others. Their services are free and are available for everyone 18 years or older. Píeta works to increase knowledge and understanding of psychological pain and suicide. The Píeta hotline is open 24/7. You can support Píeta with a financial contribution or volunteer.
SÁÁ is an Icelandic association against drug and alcohol abuse. SÁÁ operates treatment centers and supports family members of those affected. SÁÁ provides information and education about addiction and prevention. You can support SÁÁ in a variety of ways.
HIV - Ísland
HIV – Iceland is a grassroots organization which aims to prevent the transmission of HIV by spreading information and increasing understanding about HIV. HIV – Iceland supports HIV-positive individuals and their families. Their work is made possible with financial contributions.
Lífshlaupið is a motivational public health program introduced by the National Sports and Olympic association of Iceland. Lífshlaupið encourages everyone to exercise and mover their body regularly in their free time, at work, in school and as a mode of transport.
Bjartur lífsstíll is a cooperative project between the Icelandic Senior Citizen’s Organization and The National Olympic and Sports Association of Iceland. Bjartur Lífsstíll promotes the public health of senior citizens by improving health-literacy through exercise and education, as well as offering movement programs to people 60 years and older in most urban areas in Iceland.
Hjólað í vinnuna is a health initiative from National Sports and Olympic association of Iceland. People are encouraged to bike or walk to work as a form of exercise and a way to reduce the use of fossil fuels.
The Icelandic blood bank offers blood all around the country. You can give blood in Reykjavík and at various other locations.
Lýðheilsufélag Læknanema or the Medical Student’s Public Health Organization, hosts events connected to public health. Their main goal is to raise awareness about the importance of public health.
Áttavitinn.is is an informational portal which supports young people, ages 16-25. On the website you can find helpful information which goes over various life-topics. There is a team of experts that answer anonymous questions for free.
Women’s Rights
W.O.M.E.N. in Iceland is an association of immigrant women living in Iceland. The group’s objective is to give voice to women who have decided to live in Iceland. They work towards equality for foreign women and equal position in all aspects of society. They offer social support and help with matters pertaining to employment, education and fight against gender-based violence. They regularly host events. You can become a member and support the organization with financial contributions.
Rótin
Rótin is an association of women and gender non-conforming individuals who advocate for the rights and wellbeing of women and gender non-conforming individuals who have a history of trauma and/or addiction. Rótin operates Konukot which is the only homeless shelter for unhoused women in Reykjavík. You can join Rótin or support them with a financial contribution.
IWRA works towards women’s rights and the equal status of all genders in all aspects of Icelandic society. IWRA publicly provides opinions and comment on law proposals and public reports, hosts open meetings and forums, supports other grassroots associations and other projects that further equality. You can support IWRA by becoming a member and with financial contributions.
The association for women’s shelter operates two shelters, in Akureyri and Reykjavík, for women and children who cannot go home because of violence. Their hotline is operated 24/7. You can support the women’s shelters with financial contributions.
Stígamót is a non-profit organization which fights against sexually based violence and assists those who are victims of sexual violence. Stígamót aims to create a society where sexual violence is not tolerated. Financial contributions make their work possible.
Mæðrastyrksnefnd supports families with weekly food consignments. They operate an educational fund which supports low-income women and mothers in their educational endeavors. You can support Mæðrastyrksnefnd with a financial contribution or by joining one of the 6 women’s associations which operate Mæðrastyrksnefnd.
LGBTQ+
Samtökin ´78 is the National Queer Organization of Iceland. They fight for equal rights, offer counselling, spread information and awareness, as well as having community and youth programs. Their work is made possible with financial contributions and with the help of volunteers.
Trans-Ísland
Trans-Ísland is a support and advocacy group for trans people in Iceland. The organization offers support and counselling to trans people and their families. You can become a member and or support the organization with financial contributions.

According to the voluntary national review Finland is making the most progress implementing changes to further the SDGs. Sitoumous 2050 or The Commitment 2050 is a useful website where you can find recommendations and encouragement on how to adopt a more sustainable lifestyle.
Kis Lábnyom or Little Footprint is a Hungarian organization which have made tremendous progress in reducing the ecological and carbon footprint of low-income households in Hungary, while at the same time reducing household expenditures.
Global Citizen is an international organization which aims to eliminate poverty and fights for increased justice and equality in the world. Their work is made possible with financial contributions.
ONE was founded by the Irish singer Bono in 2004. Their goal is that everyone everywhere can live a dignified life and has the opportunity to improve their circumstances. ONE advocates for more just legislation, international cooperation, healthcare, education and justice.

UNSDG is a consortium of 36 United Nations funds, programmes, specialized agencies, departments and offices that play a role in development. Among the programs are: UN Development Program, UNICEF, UN Foundation & UN Environment Program.
UN Development Program is a United Nations agency tasked with helping countries eliminate poverty and achieve sustainable economic growth and human development. The UNDP emphasizes on developing local capacity towards long-term self-sufficiency and prosperity.
UNICEF is an agency of the United Nations responsible for providing humanitarian and developmental aid to children worldwide.UNICEF’s activities include providing immunizations and disease prevention, administering treatment for children and mothers with HIV, enhancing childhood and maternal nutrition, improving sanitation, promoting education, and providing emergency relief in response to disasters.
The UN foundation is a charitable organization that supports the United Nations and its activities.The UN Foundation’s main work occurs through building public-private partnerships, communities, initiatives, campaigns, and alliances to broaden support for the UN and solve global problems. The UN Foundation has helped build awareness and advocate for action on, among others, antimicrobial resistance, regional action on climate change, local implementation of the SDGs, as well as global campaigns such as Nothing But Nets against malaria, the Measles & Rubella Initiative, the Clean Cooking Alliance, Girl Up, Shot@Life, and the Digital Impact Alliance, among others.
UN Environment Program
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is responsible for coordinating responses to environmental issues within the United Nations system. Its mandate is to provide leadership, deliver science and develop solutions on a wide range of issues, including climate change, the management of marine and terrestrial ecosystems, and green economic development. The organization also develops international environmental agreements; publishes and promotes environmental science and helps national governments achieve environmental targets.
